As we approach the upcoming 100 days of summer, I reflect on the 6.734 Million records that were breached in the top 10 breaches during the summer of 2014. Do you think what we have seen so far this year will be any indication?
According to the Identity Theft Resource Center, as of May 19, 2015 there have been 304 REPORTED breaches with 101,858,356 REPORTED records breached. Now as I have stated in previous posts, the number of actual records known is only 46%. Therefore, 55% of the reported breaches indicated that the number of records breached is UNKNOWN. WOW!
Some additional statistics from this report:
- Banking/Credit/Financial – 29 Reported Breaches
- Business – 118 Reported Breaches
- Educational – 26 Reported Breaches
- Government/Military – 20 Reported Breaches
- Medical/Healthcare – 111 Reported Breaches
As you will see when you review this report, a WHOPPING 97.7% of the total number of REPORTED records that were breached came from Medical/Healthcare. Again, that is because of the regulatory landscape in this category, where more detailed data must be disclosed. We know that all of the categories listed above have an understanding of the number of records that were breached, they just are not reporting.
At the end of the day we must continue to make employees aware, involve the board of directors, and share within our community.
Individually we are a droplet, together we are an ocean.
