“Motivation gets you going and habit gets you there.” — Zig Ziglar
Zig Ziglar was my mentor and I am so fortunate to consider myself one of those millions that have been touched by his inspiration. Everyone has their “own story” and reasons why they look to Zig Ziglar for motivation and inspiration. My story was about needing inspiration professionally and finding a solid goal setting process to guide me on my health and fitness journey. I found more than the best way to set meaningful goals and how to achieve them, I also found out how to build a stronger ME along with so much motivation and inspiration.
I was introduced to Zig Ziglar in December 2007 when I found myself without a job, laid off from the company that I thought I would retire from. I met Zig on a bookstore shelf while I was looking for some prose to lift my spirit, something that would motivate me and inspire me and let me know things were going to be alright. I picked up a book titled “Better Than Good”, and asked myself who was this guy and why did he have a better than good life? I figured all I had to do was read it from cover to cover and perhaps magically my life would be the way it used to be, with a job and able to support myself and my family. I came to realize something very valuable that Zig always said, “Failure is an event not a person.”
Zig not only helped me in my professional life, but also in my personal life. It wasn’t long ago that I looked at myself in a mirror. It wasn’t long ago that I climbed a flight of stairs and looked around for more oxygen to fill my lungs. It wasn’t that long ago that I realized playing with my kids might kill me. It wasn’t that long ago I wanted something different in my life. I set a goal to be FIT at 50. You see, like many people I have been on the rollercoaster of life, weight going up, weight going down, weight going up, weight going down, oh and then one of those upside down loops just to throw that into the mix of life.
I had the motivation, I had the inspiration and now, thanks to Zig Ziglar, I had a proven goal setting tool. Not just a tool but also a process on setting goals and achieving them. I was ready.
As I reflect on what I have learned from Zig, I can attest to you today that it did help save my life. I encourage you to use his lessons for whatever you want to accomplish, live it daily, embrace it and make it YOURS. Zig always said, “There is no elevator to success … you have to take the stairs”. Accomplishing your goals will take time but you will cross the finish line. One final thing that Zig taught me, “Anything worth doing is worth doing poorly until you learn to do it well”. Go and master your goal setting process, YOU deserve it!
